In short: Marklet reads Markdown files on your Mac and renders them. There is no server, no account, no analytics, and no upload of your documents.
Introduction
LateNiteSoft (“we,” “our,” or “us”) respects your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how information is handled when you use the Marklet macOS application (“App”).
Marklet is a read-only viewer for Markdown files. It works entirely locally on your Mac. We do not operate any server for Marklet, and the App does not send your documents, file contents, file paths, settings, or history to us or to any server controlled by us.
Information We Collect
We do not collect personal information from Marklet. We do not receive, store, sell, rent, or share your documents or any data derived from them.
Documents you open
- File Contents: When you open a
.md,.markdown, or.txtfile, Marklet reads it from your Mac and renders it for viewing. The App does not edit, create, or modify your documents. - Local Processing: Documents are read and rendered on your device. Their contents are never transmitted to LateNiteSoft or to any LateNiteSoft server.
- Recent Documents: macOS maintains its standard recent-documents list and security-scoped bookmarks so you can quickly reopen files. This information is managed by macOS and stays on your device.
Settings and preferences
- App Preferences: A small amount of state, such as whether the default-app prompt has been shown, is stored locally in standard user defaults on your device.
- Per-Document Options: The “Load Remote Images” toggle is off by default and resets for each document. No preference is uploaded anywhere.
File access
- User-Selected Access: Marklet uses the macOS App Sandbox with read-only, user-selected file access. It can only read files and folders you explicitly open or grant access to.
- Referenced Images: If a document references images in a folder the sandbox has not granted, the App shows a banner asking you to grant access via a folder picker, rather than requesting broader access.
- Restricted Resource Loading: Local resources referenced by a document (such as images) are served only from the document’s own folder, with path-traversal and symlink escapes rejected.
How We Use Information
Because Marklet does not send information to our servers, information is used only locally within the App to provide its features:
- Render Markdown files with GitHub-style formatting
- Find text within the current document
- Zoom text and reload the document when it changes on disk
- Print the rendered document
- Export the document to a paginated PDF (A4 or Letter)
- Store a small amount of app preferences locally on your device
Network Access
Marklet makes no network requests by default. Nothing is ever uploaded.
The sandbox’s outgoing-connections entitlement is present for two reasons only: WebKit’s helper processes require it to function, and the optional per-document “Load Remote Images” toggle. That toggle is off by default and resets for each document. Until you enable it, all remote content is blocked at three layers: remote URLs are neutralized when the document is rendered, a Content Security Policy blocks remote loads, and the navigation delegate cancels them.
Even when you enable “Load Remote Images” for a document, any resulting requests go directly from your Mac to the servers referenced by that document, not to LateNiteSoft.
Rendering Security
Documents are rendered in WebKit. To keep viewing safe, Marklet strips javascript:, data:, and file: URLs from documents, and serves local resources through a restricted custom scheme handler limited to the document’s own folder. Clicking an external http(s) or mailto link does not navigate inside the App—it opens your default browser or mail client, an action you control.
Third-Party Services
Marklet uses Apple system frameworks, including WebKit, to provide app functionality. These frameworks are provided by Apple and are subject to Apple’s privacy practices.
If you choose to open an external link or share an exported PDF with another app or service, that action is controlled by you and may be subject to the privacy policy of the selected app or service.
Default-App Association
Marklet can offer to become the default handler for Markdown files. This is consent-first: a one-time in-app prompt appears after your first document opens (either answer permanently dismisses it), and a passive button is available on the welcome window. It uses the standard macOS NSWorkspace API, which shows macOS’s own confirmation dialog. Marklet claims Markdown types only, never .txt, and does not silently take over any file type.
Analytics, Tracking, and Advertising
Marklet does not include third-party advertising, third-party analytics, or tracking SDKs. There is no account and no sign-in. We do not track you across apps or websites.
Data Retention
Marklet does not retain your data on our servers because your data is not sent to our servers. App preferences and macOS’s recent-documents bookmarks remain locally on your device until you clear them or remove the App and its data from your device.
Children’s Privacy
Marklet is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
Security
Marklet keeps your documents local to your device and renders them with the safeguards described above. You are responsible for choosing when and with whom to share exported files. Once you share information with another app, person, or service, their handling of that information is outside Marklet’s control.
Your Choices
- You control which files and folders Marklet can access through macOS.
- You can choose whether to enable “Load Remote Images” for a document.
- You can choose whether to make Marklet the default handler for Markdown files.
- You can choose whether to print, export, or share a document.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make changes, we will update the “Last Updated” date above.
